American Sign Language/ ASL Alphabet Quilt has a light blue (almost aqua) colored, patchwork border fabric with exotic baby animals in each square. In each alphabet block, a neutral colored hand demonstrate each letter using the manual alphabet, alongside a brightly colored uppercase Roman Alphabet letter. To mirror the exotic animal theme, the corner blocks contain a monkey, an elephant, a hippo and a giraffe that gently sign to you baby: "I love you", "Love", "Baby" and "Perfect!". Inside the quilt is a soft, lovely Warm 'N' Natural batting made of a cozy cotton blend. The finished result is a snuggly soft blanket that is both beautiful to look and comfy to wrap up in.
 
Creating one of these quilts is extremely labor intensive. First, paper pattern pieces must be made for each hand and letter as well as for each layer of color in the animals. Different fabrics are then basted to each piece of paper, and stitching lines marked on them. After sewing each of these pieces to the background fabric, the basting is pulled out, the paper is removed, and the block is embroidered. After all of the blocks are appliqued and embroidered, the top of the quilt is layered over batting and backing. It is basted, then hand quilted together. After that, it is trimmed, and the raw edges are stitched by hand. The binding is sewn on the front by machine and on the back by hand. Each of these quilts takes several months to create.
 
Many are the times I have been able to talk to someone far away, or in a loud room, with the use of Sign Language and the manual alphabet. I'm sure your family can think of many instances where it would be helpful too. Any child would benefit from learning this useful language.
 
ASL Quilt measures 41.5" x 47.25". It is an original design and is hand-appliqued, hand-embroidered and hand-quilted. The back of the quilt is a plain, bleached muslin.  (Fabrics on your quilt may vary slightly from photo.)
 
The batting used has high cotton content for extra softness. The quilt has not been pre-washed. When you do wash it, it will get that lovely, crinkled look that quilts have.
